What to Do When Your Kid Wants to Quit a Game They Used to Love

So your child used to beg you for “just ten more minutes!!” and now barely mentions the same game at all anymore, well that doesn’t mean something is inherently wrong, most of the time it’s just kids doing what kids do, moving on to the next thing the same way they’ve always moved on from every obsession before this one. But it can catch a parent off guard, especially once you’d finally gotten comfortable with a game you trusted.

Is quitting actually a bad sign?

Almost never. Kids cycle through interests fast, and a game that held their attention for six months is already an outlier compared to most things they get into. Losing interest is usually just a kid’s attention naturally moving somewhere else, not evidence that something’s wrong with them or the game.

Should you push them to keep playing?

Generally, no. If a kid drifts away from something and there’s no external pressure driving that, like being excluded by friends who moved to a different platform, it’s honestly fine to just let it happen. If you attempt to force an interest in something, well that tends to backfire, and it teaches the wrong lesson about how hobbies are supposed to work.

What online games should parents trust?

Parents should look for games with live moderation, no private messaging, COPPA compliance, and an ESRB rating. Imagine Island meets all of these and is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. Trust also shows up in how a game handles a kid walking away. A trustworthy platform doesn’t manufacture guilt or manipulate a kid back in with fake urgency, expiring rewards, or streak mechanics designed to punish a break. It just lets a kid leave and come back whenever they want, with their island and their progress waiting exactly where they left it.

What if they want to come back later?

This is actually one of the nicer parts of a game like Imagine Island. A kid can step away for months and their island, their Builder Kit progress, everything they made is still sitting there when they log back in. Nothing resets, nothing punishes the break. Kids come back all the time and pick up right where they left off.

The healthiest version of this whole thing is a kid who feels like they can leave a game without losing anything and come back without any weirdness attached to it either way. That’s a pretty good sign the game earned the time it got in the first place.

Imagine Island is a safe, creative online world for kids under 13 with live moderation, no private messaging, and COPPA compliance. Learn more in the Grownups section of the Imagine Island website.
