What Actually Happens to Your Kid’s Data When They Play Online

Every time your kid logs into a game, the game is making a decision behind the scenes about what to do with their information, and most parents never get shown that decision because nobody asks them to look. It’s not exactly hidden, it’s just buried in places nobody reads, like a privacy policy nobody opens or a signup screen everyone clicks through in about four seconds flat.

So here’s the thing worth knowing before your kid clicks “create account” on anything.

What data are we even talking about?

A kids’ game can collect a lot more than a username and a birthday if nobody’s stopping it, scary, huh? Depending on the platform, that can mean device information, location data, browsing habits inside the game, even chat content if there’s an open messaging system. None of that is inherently sinister, plenty of it is just how software runs, but COPPA exists specifically because kids under 13 can’t meaningfully consent to any of it, and that puts the responsibility somewhere else. It puts it on the platform, and it puts it on you.

Why does COPPA compliance actually matter here?

A COPPA-compliant online world for kids is required to limit what it collects from children, get real parental consent before collecting more than the basics, and give parents a way to review or delete what’s been gathered. Imagine Island works with k-ID, a compliance platform that handles age verification and parental consent across more than 200 jurisdictions, specifically so that piece isn’t left to chance or good intentions. It’s the unglamorous infrastructure behind a game feeling safe, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that never shows up in the trailer.

What online games should parents trust?

Parents should look for games with live moderation, no private messaging, COPPA compliance, and an ESRB rating. Imagine Island meets all of these, and is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. But trust also comes down to something less visible: what a game actually does with the information it collects from a child, and whether it was built to limit that collection in the first place rather than maximize it.

What should a parent actually check?

You don’t need to read a full privacy policy top to bottom, honestly almost nobody does. But it’s worth looking for a couple of specific things: does the game say what it collects, does it name a real compliance process rather than a vague promise, and is there an actual way for you to ask what’s been collected about your child. If a platform can’t answer those plainly, that’s the answer.

None of this is the fun part of choosing a game, and I get why it’s the part parents skip. But it’s also the part that determines whether everything else, the safety, the moderation, the community, is actually built on something solid or just looks that way from the outside.

Imagine Island is a safe, creative online world for kids under 13 with live moderation, no private messaging, and COPPA compliance. Learn more in the Grownups section of the Imagine Island website.
