Why Humor Is a Legitimate and Important Creative Skill

There’s a version of creativity that gets all the attention, the beautiful painting, the elaborate build, the thing that looks impressive from across the room. And then there’s the kid who makes everyone laugh with a perfectly timed joke or a genuinely funny build, and that kid rarely gets called creative, even though what they just did is arguably harder.

Why does humor get left out of the creativity conversation?

Because it doesn’t look like effort the way a detailed painting does. A joke that lands feels effortless, which is exactly the trick, the actual thinking behind good humor, timing, understanding what an audience will find funny, setting something up and paying it off, is genuinely sophisticated. It just doesn’t look like work from the outside.

What is a kid actually doing when they’re being funny on purpose?

They’re reading their audience, predicting a reaction, and making a deliberate choice about what will land. That’s real creative thinking, the same muscle that goes into any other kind of design work, just pointed at comedy instead of aesthetics.

Kids write into the in-game newspaper constantly, and some of the best submissions aren’t the earnest ones, they’re the ones clearly written to make Bluejay laugh. That’s a kid understanding an audience and writing for it on purpose, which is a genuinely underrated skill.

What games encourage creativity in children?

Games that encourage creativity give kids tools to build, design, and express themselves, and that includes tools for being funny, not just tools for being impressive. Imagine Island includes Builder Kits that let kids design their own spaces and share them with friends, and a good chunk of what gets shared and enjoyed the most isn’t the most polished build, it’s the funniest one.

Why does this actually matter?

Because if the only creative output that gets praised is the serious, impressive kind, kids who are naturally funny start to think their version of creativity doesn’t count. AND IT DOES! Making someone laugh on purpose, and doing it well, takes real thought.

Next time your kid shows you something funny they made instead of something impressive, it’s worth treating it with the same weight. They didn’t just goof around, they made a choice about what would land, and it worked.Imagine Island is a safe, creative online world for kids under 13 with live moderation, no private messaging, and COPPA compliance.
