What to Do When Another Parent Complains About Your Child’s Online Behavior

Getting a message from another parent about something your kid did online is a specific kind of uncomfortable, it lands somewhere between embarrassed and defensive before you’ve even heard the whole story, and how you handle those first few minutes matters more than most parents expect.

What’s the first move?

Listen before you respond. It’s tempting to immediately explain, defend, or minimize, but the other parent came to you because something actually happened, and starting with genuine listening tends to de-escalate a conversation that could otherwise turn into two parents defending their kids instead of two parents solving a problem.

What if the game already flagged or handled it?

That’s actually useful information to bring into the conversation. If there’s a report or a moderation record, it takes some of the guesswork out of an otherwise he-said-she-said situation, and it gives both parents something concrete to talk about instead of competing versions of the story.

What do you actually say to your kid?

Ask what happened from their perspective, without leading the question. Kids this age often genuinely don’t register that something felt hurtful to someone else, not because they don’t care, but because they’re still learning to read that in a screen instead of in person. That’s a real conversation, not a punishment.

Nobody enjoys getting that message. But it’s worth remembering that the other parent probably didn’t enjoy sending it either, and the two of you actually want the same thing, kids who feel comfortable and safe when they’re playing something together.

What online games should parents trust?

Parents should look for games with live moderation, no private messaging, and COPPA compliance, because when something does go wrong between kids, a game with real oversight has already reviewed it, or can, instead of leaving two families to sort out exactly what happened from secondhand accounts. Imagine Island meets all of these and is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB.

Imagine Island is a safe, creative online world for kids under 13 with live moderation, no private messaging, and COPPA compliance. Learn more in the Grownups section of the Imagine Island website.
