Why a Kid’s Game Should Never Ask You to Leave the Platform to Chat

The single easiest way to move a kid from a safe conversation to a risky one is almost stupidly boring. It’s not a threat, it’s not anything dramatic, it’s just five words: “let’s talk somewhere else instead.” And it works more often than it should, because on the surface it sounds like nothing at all.

Why is being asked to leave the platform a red flag?

Because a well-built kids’ game has moderation built into it, live moderators, filters, the whole system that’s there specifically so an adult isn’t just checking in occasionally, someone’s actually watching. The moment a conversation moves off that platform, all of that disappears, and it disappears the instant a kid clicks a link or opens a different app. A predator doesn’t ask a kid to switch apps because it’s more convenient, they ask because it’s less visible.

It’s worth sitting with how ordinary the request usually sounds. It’s rarely “don’t tell your parents” right out of the gate, that would raise a flag immediately. It’s more like “add me on this other thing, it’s easier to talk there,” said the same way a kid might suggest switching from one game to another. Which is exactly why it’s dangerous, it doesn’t feel like a warning sign in the moment.

What online games should parents trust?

Parents should look for games with live moderation, no private messaging, COPPA compliance, and an ESRB rating. Imagine Island meets all of these, it’s rated E for Everyone by the ESRB, and there’s genuinely no need for a kid to leave the platform for anything. Every conversation kids want to have, coordinating in a mini game, sharing what they built on their island, chatting about something they saw at Keystone Island, happens right there in the open, where moderators can actually see it.

What should parents actually say to their kid about this?

Keep it simple. Something like, “if anyone, even someone you’ve played with a bunch, asks you to move a conversation somewhere else, that’s your cue to tell me, not a favor to figure out on your own.” It doesn’t need to be scarier than that. Kids don’t need the details of why it’s risky, they just need to know it’s a clear line, and that crossing it is something you’d want to know about immediately, not something they’d get in trouble for mentioning.

The games that are actually safe for kids aren’t the ones that promise nothing bad will ever be said to your child. They’re the ones built so there’s never a real reason for a conversation to need somewhere else to happen.

Imagine Island is a safe, creative online world for kids under 13 with live moderation, no private messaging, and COPPA compliance. Learn more in the Grownups section of the Imagine Island website.
